|

One of five Floridians still doesn't have health insurance, the third-highest rate in the nation, even though the state and the nation last year both had declines in the ranks of the uninsured, according to a report Tuesday from the Census Bureau.

Southwest to trim flight schedule
|
One Lauderdale-Chicago flight will be affected next year
Southwest Airlines Co., the largest low-fare carrier, will cut its schedule by 190 flights, or about 6 percent, starting Jan. 11 because of lower travel demand.

Houston-based Waste Management said Tuesday that it plans to respond to the request "promptly."

A federal jury awarded Mattel Inc. $100 million in damages on Tuesday in a federal copyright lawsuit that pitted the house of Barbie against MGA Entertainment Inc., the maker of the saucy Bratz dolls. In his closing arguments, Mattel attorney John Quinn said MGA owed Mattel at least $1 billion in Bratz profits. MGA hailed the decision as vindication in the case.

Eli Lilly and Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. on Tuesday reported four new deaths in patients taking Byetta, even as the companies tried to shore up the safety profile of their popular diabetes medication. The announcement comes a week after the Food and Drug Administration said two Byetta patients died of acute pancreatitis, sinking shares of both drugmakers. An executive from Eli Lilly said the FDA was aware of the additional deaths but did not announce them because they involved a milder form of pancreatitis.

Sears Holdings Corp. voluntarily recalled 145,000 Kenmore brand coffee makers because the wiring can overheat and cause fires or burns, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday. The recall includes 12-cup Kenmore and Kenmore Elite coffee makers sold through Sears, Sears Hardware and Kmart stores as well as online from August 2007 through April.
